What Kind of Articles Appear in Powerline?
EGSA actively encourages its Members and others to submit articles or proposals for articles for Powerline.
We publish both technical and business stories, and we are especially interested in "how-to" articles aimed at our consulting engineer and distributor/dealer readers, which account for the majority of our subscription base.
For example, in the past, we published a feature story on how to plan an interruptible-rate facility. In that article, we covered all the steps involved in planning and designing an on-site power facility used for peak sharing, including options for equipment, installation, fueling, and financing. Throughout the feature, we used an actual installation to demonstrate each point.
This particular article was quite broad, covering many issues, both technical
and business-related. We could also have published a story with an in-depth
focus on any one aspect of that installation.
We also like to publish feature articles on the history, current
status, and future of specific on-site generating technologies. For example,
we have recently published articles on the future of generator controls,
engine preheating, and others.
And our engineer readers are very interested in any information that helps them better do their job. To that end, authors have submitted articles explaining the "per unit" method and how to calculate noise at a specific distance from a gen-set.
Finally, we also publish non-technical stories which focus on the business-side of the industry. For example, in the past year you might have read articles on the doing business overseas, or the current trends in gen-set sales, or the financial payoffs of demand-side management for the on-site power industry.
What about product-specific articles?
Because Powerline is the mouthpiece of an organization that has nearly 600 different companies as Members, articles cannot be seen as endorsing any particular company or product.
For that reason, our editorial policy prevents us from publishing product-specific or service-specific information. We cannot, therefore, publish articles about your particular products or services, except within the broader context of an article such as those described above.
What's in it for your company?
That doesn’t mean you won’t get any publicity from authorship. You and your company will be mentioned in the by-line, and at the end of the article, we will include a paragraph describing what you and your company do.
There is also some latitude in mentioning your company within the article itself, which we can discuss if you decide to write for our publication.
In general, we prefer to look over an outline or brief synopsis of the article before it is actually written and to get the first draft a month or so before the publication is due to go to the printer, which is on the 15th of January, March, May, July, September, and November.
How do you get involved?
