Understanding Alternators and Their Components - Hosted by STAMFORD | AvK

This session will cover how an alternator works, electrically and mechanically, and the functionality of each one of its internal components, as energy flows through it. We’ll cover the excitation system, AVR, main rotor and stator, voltage lead reconnections, the advantages of a PMG, and available accessories—bringing it all together through the practical application of electromagnetism.

Sergio Cardenas, Regional Sales Manager for LATAM & FL, brings more than 18 years of experience in the onsite power generation industry, complemented by a tenure supporting renewable and utility-sector services. Sergio holds a bachelor in science of Electrical Engineering and an Executive MBA from Florida International University. His career started as a service engineer, and over the years has held multiple commercial key roles across the organization, building a deep, well‑rounded understanding of the Americas markets and an array of technical aspects in industry. Based in Miami, FL, Sergio is widely regarded as a knowledgeable and trusted partner for customers throughout the entire region.

Tim Courant Application Engineering Manager

Tim Courant is an experienced engineering leader with long tenure at Cummins Generator Technologies, currently serving as Application Engineering Manager – Americas in Shoreview, Minnesota. His background spans application engineering, technical service, and engineering leadership in the power generation industry, complemented by prior service in the U.S. Army as a Chinook helicopter mechanic. He holds a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering from the University of Minnesota, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1995, and brings additional experience from engineering and program leadership roles at Polaris Industries, DaimlerChrysler, and Cummins Inc.
